Manual:System administration

From Good Old TV Fan Wiki

<languages/> <translate> This page links instructions for common administrative tasks which you may wish to perform once your [[<tvar|inst-guide>Manual:Installation guide</>|installation]] of MediaWiki is completed.

Configuration[edit]

</translate>

<translate> See <tvar|1>Manual:LocalSettings.php</></translate>

<translate> If you installed MediaWiki through the web interface, then you already ran the [[<tvar|script>Special:MyLanguage/Manual:Config script</>|initial configuration script]] that sets common configuration variables.

MediaWiki has several configuration settings.</translate> <translate> They must be modified in <tvar|LocalSettings>LocalSettings.php</>.</translate> <translate> See <tvar|1>Manual:Configuration settings</> for the whole list.

Toggle uploads on and off[edit]

</translate>

<translate> See <tvar|1>Manual:Configuring file uploads</></translate>

<translate>

Choosing a design: Selecting a skin[edit]

</translate>

<translate> See <tvar|1>Manual:Skin configuration</></translate>

<translate> The default skin can be adjusted by modifying the <tvar|DefaultSkin>$wgDefaultSkin</> variable in <tvar|LocalSettings>LocalSettings.php</>.

A few other settings can also [[<tvar|config>Special:MyLanguage/Manual:Configuration settings#Skins</>|be adjusted]] regarding skins.

There are also some custom skins, see <tvar|1>Special:AllPages/Skin:</>.

Other[edit]

For a list of configuration settings, see: </translate>

<translate> To configure specific parts of the software, see: </translate>

  • Manual:Short URL <translate> - more user-friendly URLs to article pages.</translate>

<translate>

Configuration Apache, PHP and the Database[edit]

If you have downloaded binary packages of MySQL (or Postgres), the Apache HTTP Server, and PHP, chances are that they came with an installation script that set them up for your system.</translate> <translate> To tweak them further, see: </translate>

<translate>

Making the wiki fast[edit]

</translate>

<translate> See <tvar|1>Manual:Performance tuning</></translate>

<translate>

Setting administrative rights[edit]

MediaWiki is a permissions-based wiki system.</translate> <translate> That means that users will only be able to perform the actions they are allowed to do.

As declaring permissions individually for every user would be tedious and impractical, several <tvar|rights>Manual:User rights</> are pre-defined in MediaWiki.

You are also allowed to declare new user groups, as your needs require.

Individual [[<tvar|contents>Special:MyLanguage/Extension:Contents</>|extensions]] may also require creating new user rights.

Regardless of how they are created, user groups are fully customizable, by modifying the <tvar|GroupPermissions>$wgGroupPermissions</> associative array in your <tvar|LocalSettings>LocalSettings.php</> file. </translate>

<translate>

Sysop (Administrator)[edit]

The most common use. A user marked as 'sysop' can delete and undelete pages, block and unblock IPs and use a shortcut revert-to-previous-contributor's-revision feature in contribs, see <tvar|m-admin>Manual:Administrators</> for more information.

Bureaucrat[edit]

Users in this group can change user rights through <tvar|spec-ur>Special:UserRights</>.

Bot[edit]

A registered bot account. Edits by an account with this set will not appear by default in Recent changes; this is intended for mass imports of data without flooding human edits from view. (Add <tvar|hidebots>&hidebots=0</> to list changes made by bots e.g. [<tvar|1>http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Recentchanges&hidebots=0</> like this])

Installing extensions[edit]

</translate>

<translate> See <tvar|1>Manual:Extensions</></translate>

<translate> Extensions are compilations of PHP code that add new features or enhance functionality of the main MediaWiki core.

Localisation[edit]

</translate>

<translate> See <tvar|1>Help:System message</></translate>

<translate> If you simply want to change the language of a wiki on a per-user basis, this can be done via <tvar|spec-pref>Special:Preferences</>. If you selected the wrong language when setting up the wiki simply change the $wgLanguageCode in <tvar|LocalSettings>LocalSettings.php</>.

Maintenance scripts[edit]

</translate>

<translate> See <tvar|1>Manual:Maintenance scripts</></translate>

<translate> MediaWiki has some maintenance script to help doing administrative tasks.

Update MediaWiki[edit]

</translate>

<translate> See <tvar|1>Manual:Upgrading</></translate>

<translate>

Getting data[edit]

Back up[edit]

</translate>

<translate> See <tvar|1>Manual:Backing up a wiki</></translate>

<translate> It is important to make regular backups of the data in your wiki. This includes the database, uploaded files and extensions.

Importing a database dump[edit]

</translate>

<translate> See <tvar|1>Manual:Importing XML dumps</></translate>

<translate> If you want a local copy of a Wikimedia wiki, see the overview at <tvar|meta-dd>meta:Data dumps</> and the [<tvar|d>http://download.wikipedia.org/</> download site].

Converting (importing) existing content[edit]

</translate>

<translate> See <tvar|1>Manual:Importing external content</></translate>

<translate> Some scripts exist to import data from other wiki engines.

On-wiki customizations[edit]

</translate>

<translate> See <tvar|1>Manual:Page customizations</></translate>

<translate> Much of the appearance and messaging of MediaWiki is determined by messages that administrators can edit like regular wiki pages.

Changing the sidebar[edit]

</translate>

<translate> See <tvar|1>Manual:Sidebar</></translate>

<translate>

Changing the tagline[edit]

</translate>

<translate> See <tvar|1>Manual:Tagline (Site Subtitle)</></translate>
